White House Says Nothing Is ‘Off The Table’ In Fight Against ‘Misinformation’

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently admitted that government officials have been working with social media giant Facebook to “flag” content they consider “misinformation.”

Now, the White House is even saying that nothing is “off the table” when it comes to “regulatory or legal moves” to address “disinformation” on social media.

Psaki: “I Don’t Think We’ve Taken Any Options Off The Table”

A reporter asked Psaki, “The President suggested that [social media] executives ‘look in the mirror’ and change their practices. Does that mean the administration isn’t considering and regulatory or legal moves to possibly address disinformation on social media?”

“I don’t think we’ve taken any options off the table,” Psaki said on Monday. “That’s up to Congress to determine how they want to proceed moving forward.”

“We are not in a war or a battle with Facebook,” she insisted. “We are in a battle with the virus.”

Psaki added, “The problem we’re seeing that our Surgeon General elevated last week is that disinformation traveling through a range of mediums… that inaccurate information about vaccines is killing people.”

But the White House isn’t merely leaving it up to Congress. On Tuesday, the White House said they are looking at whether or not social media companies are “liable” for “misinformation.”

Biden’s communications director Kate Bedingfield told MSNBC, “We’re reviewing that, and certainly they should be held accountable.”

Last Thursday, Psaki said the administration was tracking content online.

“We’ve increased disinformation research and tracking within the surgeon general‘s office,” Psaki said.

She continued, “We’re flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation.”

“We’re working with doctors and medical professionals to connect medical experts who are popular with our audiences with accurate information and boost trusted content — so we are helping get trusted content out there,” Psaki said.

How Is ‘Misinformation’ Defined?

Administration officials, including President Joe Biden, have said that they believe Facebook is “killing people,” though Biden later backtracked: “Facebook isn’t killing people. These 12 people are out there giving misinformation, anyone listening to it is getting hurt by it. It’s killing people. It’s bad information. My hope is that Facebook, instead of taking it personally…that they would do something about the misinformation.”

Of course, many have wondered what parameters government officials might be using to determine what content should be flagged.

A Biden administration official told Fox News, “They’ve been withholding information on what the rules are, what they have put in place to prevent dangerous misinformation from spreading [and] how they measure whether it’s working.”
